In late March 2025, the Union County Board of Commissioners voted 6-3 to put the county jail up for sale. Despite outcry from members of the public and immigration rights groups, who fear that the highest bidder might use the property for ICE detentions, the commissioners declined to put any parameters on potential buyers.

Voting for the resolution to sell without any restrictions on bidders were Vice Chair Joseph Bodek, as well as Commissioners James E. Baker, Jr., Bette Jane Kowalski, Alexander Mirabella, Kimberly Palmer-Mouded and Rebecca Williams.

Board Chair Lourdes Leon, along with Commissioners Michèle S. Delisfort and Sergio Granados, voted against the resolution.
